Now, let's start and test your comprehension skills!

Let's goooo!

  • Bonjour Adrien
Je me sens plus a l’aise avec ce genre d’excercises ;malgré des erreurs j’ai appris pas mal de choses :comme liking .L’explication de la différence entre If et whether ;Que should se transforme en si selon le contexte .Pour moi cela doit être plaisant et cela l’a été .Merci a vous

  • Hi Adrien !!! I would like to know what’s the difference between « Tasting » and « liking »…..

    Best regard….

    • Hello Jacques,

      Thanks a lot for asking.

      Tasting, c’est la « dégustation »
      Liking, c’est le « goût » au sens… figuré.

      Have a nice day.

  • Je viens de lire tes réponses aux autres utilisateurs, bon au moins je ne suis pas la seule à me faire étaler la dessus come une tarte.

  • Aie. I’ve got all wrong with the second text. Could you explain please to me the use of whether in this case? I used to use it when two solutions are presented, like « I don’t know whether he likes tea or coffee » in this case the second one ( they don’t accept pets) is only implied. Is the sentence with « if » incorrect or this with « whether » only looks better? I feel a bit lost I must confess.
    Thanks for your help.

    Regards

    • Hi Anna,

Dans ce cas IF et Whether se valent en réalité. Whether est en effet plus soutenu.

Voici un article qui t’en apprendra davantage à ce sujet: https://www.ispeakspokespoken.com/if-wether/.

      I hope this helps. 🙂

PS: Ouch. All my answers are wrong in the second text. Could you explain please to me the use of whether in this case? I used to use it when two solutions are presented, like « I don’t know whether he likes tea or coffee » in this case the second one (they don’t accept pets) is only implied. Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Adrien,

    11 out of 16.
After seeing the correction, I understood my mistakes.. It was mainly a problem of vocabulary, and therefore of comprehension. Not everything is obvious!
So, for the text n° 6, I thought that students were already graduated, and not in the process of graduating
And I was surprised by the word « résumé » with the accents.

Have a good rest of the day.

    • Hi Christian,

Indeed, missing some words can lead to confusion.

Résumé –> was taken from French. Many French words kept their accents when crossing the Channel! Especially foodwise: crêmé brulée / chocolate gâteau / vegetable soufflé

      I hope this helps. 🙂

      Have a great day.

  • I made 6 mistakes and I ve learned a lot with the corrections here under. About valued I haven t found anything about it. I selected valued
    And
How can you translate j ai fait 3 erreurs DONT/ these kind of small words annoying. Thanks

    • Hey Caroline,

« I made three mistakes including this kind of small annoying words. »

      Have a great day.

PS: Beware not to forget apostrophes when writing in English.

I made 6 mistakes and I’ve learned a lot with the corrections here under. About valued I haven’t found anything about it.
How can you translate: « J’ai fait 3 erreurs DONT these kind of small annoying words »?.
      Thanks.

  • Hello Adrien,
    Why for the question 21 you can’t put « if » instead of « whether » ?
What does it mean « it was wonderful but a bit too far and long for our liking » ? I do not understand « liking ».
    thank you

    • Hello Frédérique,

Thank you for your questions. Let me try to clear things up for you a little:

      – You should use if when you have a conditional sentence and whether when two alternatives are possible. = Tell me whether you want to come or not. If you don’t come, I won’t go either.
      – Liking is a noun that describe the feeling that you like something or someone. = taste

      I hope this was helpful.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

  • Hello Adrien,

In the text number 6, any possibility to write if ?
Also you wrote 8-year-old could you explain it to me why this is the right answer ?
Text 5 i don’t understand what does the sentence unprecedented professionnal opportunities mean ?
Text 8 you wrote résumé it’s write word for CV?
Text 7 you wrote should you wish, could you also explain to me why this choice ?

    Thanks for answer

    Nice afternoon

    • Hello Jamila,

      Thanks a lot for asking.

1/ In academic English, no. But in reality a lot of native speakers use « if » in such a sentence, but it is considered as a mistake when you take an English exam.
However, please note that when there are 2 possibilities, (when it is a closed question: yes or no), one has to use « whether »!
Could you also please tell me ______ you accept pets? => Do you OR do you not? (2 possibilities)

2/ Unprecedented professionnal opportunities means « des opportunités professionnelles auxquelles on n’a pas eu accès avant ». English is so much shorter, very often!

3/ Résumé is a synonym of CV in English.

4/ Should + sujet + verb in an affirmative sentence means = Si/dans la mesure où + vous + verbe conjugué au présent en français.
For example : Should you want to have more information… = Si vous voulez avoir plus d’informations…
It can only be formed with the auxiliary verb « should », therefore it is the only solution.

      I hope this helps!

Have a good rest of the day.

  • Hi Adrien,

I noticed that the good answer in the text 6 is  »8-year-old »
    I answered 8-years-old.
    Why « year » doesn’t have S? May I have an explanation?

Have a good rest of the day.

    Marc

    • Hey Marc,

      Thank you for your question!

There are 2 ways of expressing the age. In the sentence « An 8-year-old dog » (with hyphens ( – )), 8-year-old is considered an adjective and thus invariable as in « a 10-kilo suitcase », « an 8-kilometer-long road ».
But you could also say « My dog is 8 years old »

Let me correct a few mistakes in your message if you don’t mind:

      Hi Adrien,

I noticed that the correct answer in the text 6 is ”8-year-old”
      I answered 8-years-old.
Why doesn’t “year” have an S? May I have an explanation, please?

Have a good rest of the day.

      Marc

      I hope it helps.

      Have a nice evening.

  • Je comprends qu’il pourrait y avoir une différence entre graduated et graduating mais le dictionnaire traduit les deux de la même façon : diplômé.
Je ne sais quoi en penser.

  • Hi,
    horrible : 7/16 !

    please, could you explain :
    1. the difference between « tasting » and « linking » ? I chose « tasting » in Text6.
    2. why « whether » and not « if » in « Could you tell me whether you accept pets? » (Text6)
3, and finally explain (or maybe in a next youtube video ;-)), the subtle difference between : discussed, spoken and talked. I chose « talked » in Text5

    Best regards
    Xavier

    • Hello Xavier,

Thanks a lot for asking, it is not « terrible », it’s a good start ;).

      To answer your questions:

      I hope that helps.

Have a good rest of the day.
